With a site name like “Extremely Normal Couponing”, you would think that I hate the show “Extreme Couponing” on TLC. That just isn’t the case. Is the show ridiculous at times? Sure, but I enjoy watching it. The problem with the show is that people think that it is real life, and while those trips as they happen are truthful, that’s not going to be everyone’s experience. Many people get started with couponing because of the show which is great, but they get started with a false premise of what it’s going to be like!
Hopefully this guide will show you how a normal couponer views the show, what you you can expect out of couponing, and where to go from there…
Is it really possible to have shopping trips like the ones on the TV show?
This is one of the most popular questions people ask after watching the show. My answer is a hesitant “Yes.” It is possible to have such a shopping trip, but you need to re-examine what their shopping trips looked like. They bought huge quantities of a small amount of items. The types of trips on the TV show sure aren’t what my shopping trips look like every week! These are special trips, designed for the TV show, that use a huge bulk of coupons for a specific item that is on a fantastic sale plus has a non-expired coupon available that makes the item free or near free. They normally aren’t buying meats, produce, etc. They are making special trips for the sensationalism of television. So, while these shopping trips are real, they aren’t too realistic.
How can I have a shopping trip as good as those people on the TV show?
This is the wrong question to ask. The goal of couponing isn’t to walk out of the store and pay nothing or little to nothing. Yes, it is nice when you’re able to do that, but for the most part, you’re not going to be able to get $1,000+ worth of groceries for $25. If you change your mindset from wanting to be like the people on the TV show, to figuring out how you can save money by using coupons, you’ll progress much further and you’ll begin to save thousands of dollars, it may just not all be in one trip.
What if none of the stores around me doubles coupons?
One way to save money is to use store promotions, and a popular promotion that some stores have is doubling coupons. Not every store offers this promotion though, which leaves a lot of new couponers frustrated. None of the stores in my area double coupons and I am still able to save money. While having coupons doubled would be a nice benefit, you are still able to save a lot of money on groceries, even if you aren’t walking out of the store with everything for free. Learn what promotions your store DOES have and utilize those promotions to your benefit!
How much time does couponing take?
People on the TV show talk about spending 20, 40, 60 hours on couponing. Those people are crazy. Maybe their hobby is couponing, and more power to them, but I have other hobbies I enjoy, a family I like to spend time with, and other priorities in my life that I need to take care of, where I can’t devote 20 hours to couponing. Really, these days, with blogs like mine and many other couponing blogs out there, you can find all of the hottest deals from the stores you shop at, so the only time you need to spend is looking through those deals, find the ones for stuff that you buy, cut those coupons out, and go to the store and do your shopping! Couponing takes as long as you want it to! Don’t let people on the show saying that they spend 40 hours a week couponing deter you from saving money on your groceries!
How do they get so many coupons?
As I mentioned above, these aren’t normal shopping trips, even for couponers. They buy a huge quantity of a small amount of items. This requires a lot of coupons. One of the ways that people get a ton of the same coupon is by acquiring tons and tons and tons of inserts. This isn’t possible for everyone. The easiest way to get a ton of the same coupon is to purchase them on eBay or on coupon clipping websites. This will cost you money, so make sure that you’re still going to save enough money in order to make it worth it, even after buying the coupons. (Side Note: This is one of the things I hate about the show. For those who did spend money to acquire the coupons, they don’t factor that into the total, which gives a false sense of savings.)
Is TLC’s Extreme Coupoing show ruining couponing?
Many people have strong opinions about the TV show, and they use the TV show as a scapegoat for stores changing their coupon policies, and how the TV show is going to ruin couponing for good. These people are the type that freak out over a lot of different things in life. The fact is, stores changed their coupon policies before the show was even thought of, let alone produced and aired! Stores are constantly changing all of their policies, even the non-coupon related ones, they just don’t usually affect you so you haven’t noticed. One of the main reasons that stores are changing their coupon policies is because a select few are ABUSING the policies. I am firmly against using coupons in an incorrect manner. One policy that the complainers like to use as an example is Walgreen’s “limit 4″ policy. I am all for this policy! I am sick of going to Walgreens to get a deal and there not being anything on the shelf because one person came and got 30 of them. If people didn’t abuse policies and had some decency, then the stores wouldn’t need to implement such policies, it’s as simple as that. The stores want you to come and use coupons in their store, but they still want to make money and they still want to have all of their customers to have a good shopping experience, so they put policies in place to make sure that this will happen. None of the new policies at stores have hindered my normal couponing, and if anything, they’ve made it better because now there is product on the shelf for me to get as well!
Extreme Couponing on TLC is an entertaining show. Yes, you need to look at the show for what it is, a TV show and not a portrayal of real life, but I am all for people learning that they can save money on their groceries, they just need to learn the right way to do it, and what is realistic for them!
